I’ve listed below 25 question that people have asked me either in the past or recently. These questions are all art related or about the direction my journey is taking. Behold, here they are:
1. What inspired you to start creating charcoal art?
From a young age, I have been captivated by the striking power of contrasts and the drama they infuse into art. As I explored different artistic mediums, I discovered that charcoal struck the ideal balance between control and expressiveness, enabling me to explore the intricate details that fascinated me. My early experiments with graphite pencils and charcoal ignited a curiosity that propelled me to investigate how these materials could be utilized to produce bold, dynamic images. The versatility of charcoal, capable of both subtle shading and strong, definitive lines, captivated my attention. It was this unique blend of precision and freedom that led me to adopt charcoal as my primary medium, offering a channel for my creativity and a way to convey my artistic vision in a manner that felt both challenging and immensely fulfilling.
2. How did you discover your talent for charcoal drawing?
It was quite an unexpected journey, really. My initial foray into art was driven by curiosity rather than a deliberate pursuit of charcoal drawing. During my early years, I dabbled in various mediums, trying to find my niche. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon charcoal by accident that I truly discovered my passion for it.
3. What themes or subjects do you focus on in your artwork?
I mainly focus on capturing the beauty and complexity of the human form and the intricate details of objects that evoke emotion and tell a story. My subjects often center around portraits and still life, where I can explore the delicate interplay of light and shadow to bring out the essence of my subjects. I am fascinated by the expressions and nuances of the human face, which allow me to convey a wide range of emotions and narratives. Additionally, I find inspiration in everyday objects, transforming them into compelling studies of texture and contrast through my art. This approach not only allows me to express my artistic vision but also invites viewers to appreciate the subtleties and depth present in the seemingly ordinary.
4. Can you describe your creative process?
It begins with the selection of a reference photo, which I meticulously grid to ensure accurate proportions. This grid is mirrored on my drawing surface, setting the stage for a detailed and faithful representation. I start by outlining basic shapes with soft pencils or vine charcoal, using rulers for precise alignment. This structured approach lays the groundwork for the expressive freedom that follows.
5. How long does it typically take to complete a piece?
The time frame for completing a piece can vary significantly based on the size, complexity, and level of detail required. Smaller artworks, with less intricate details, might take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days. In contrast, larger and more complex pieces can take several weeks or even months to complete. The creative process itself has a major impact on the timeline. I meticulously craft each detail. This ensures it meets my envisioned expectations. Every piece is unique. The time dedicated to it reflects my commitment to each piece. It also shows my passion for creating art that resonates with both myself and my clients.

6. Do you offer custom or commissioned artwork?
Yes, I do! Please take a look at my commission portfolio to see some of my creations. If you’re interested in having me design something specifically for you, feel free to get in touch.
7. What sizes and formats are available for your pieces?
What sizes and formats do you offer for your artwork? Currently, I have created pieces in A4 and A3 sizes, although I hope to work on larger formats in the future when I have more space.
My original creations primarily utilize charcoal, with occasional touches of graphite. Additionally, I provide reproductions of my work as Fine art greetings cards & Giclée prints↗
8. How do you price your artwork?
Cost
Pricing artwork can be a nuanced process, as it often reflects the value of the skill, time, and creativity.
Price Compare
I tend to look at what other artists with similar experience and style are charging.
Math
I think about the cost of materials, the time it takes and the size of the work. This ensures that I cover my basic costs.
Art For All
Having a range of prices I can attract a broader audience. This is why I include smaller, more affordable pieces along with larger, more expensive works.
9. Do you offer framing options for your charcoal drawings?
Although I currently do not provide framing services, I am considering the option of offering mountings for my original artwork and commissions in the future. This potential new service could add significant value for my clients, allowing them to receive a complete, ready-to-display piece directly from the artist. By offering high-quality mountings, I hope to enhance the presentation and longevity of my work, ensuring that it can be enjoyed in its best possible form. This added convenience might also appeal to customers who appreciate the ease of having a professionally mounted artwork without needing to seek additional services elsewhere.
10. What materials do you use for your charcoal art?
I utilize blending stumps, clean makeup brushes, and small cotton swabs from beauty kits. Additionally, I depend on vine charcoal, charcoal pencils, erasers, rulers, and eraser blockers. Each of these tools has a specific function in the creative process. By thoughtfully combining these materials, I can infuse depth, texture, and vitality into my charcoal artwork, capturing a full spectrum of values and creating dynamic, expressive pieces.
11. How do you ensure the longevity and preservation of your work?
- Proper Handling: Use clean hands or cotton gloves to avoid transferring oils.
- Fixatives: Apply fixative spray to charcoal in a well-ventilated area.
- Framing: Use acid-free materials and UV-protective glass for framing.
- Storage: Keep unframed pieces flat in a cool, dry place using archival-quality materials.
- Environment: Avoid direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperatures.
- Cleaning: Gently clean with a soft, dry cloth; avoid water or cleaning solutions.
- Restoration: Consult a professional conservator for damaged pieces.
