Hiding away Drawing Lady Bug Leaf While COVID-19 Spreads

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Guardian reported a death toll of 50,032 in June 2020. During this time, I turned to my art for solace and found a new appreciation for working with charcoal and graphite.

Charcoal’s tonal range is unparalleled, but can be a bit too smudgy at times, which is where graphite comes in handy to provide more control.

Charcoal and graphite are both versatile mediums that can create stunning effects individually. When used together, they can produce unique and captivating results. Combining the two mediums can bring out the best in each.

Their distinct characteristics work in harmony to create depth, texture, and contrast. Charcoal is known for its rich, bold, and dramatic qualities, making it perfect for creating whimsical and charming pieces.

On the other hand, graphite is known for its delicate and precise lines, making it perfect for drawing ladybirds on leaf’s.

Exploring Ladybirds with Charcoal and Graphite

To create a stunning artwork of a ladybird, I started with lightly sketch of the basic outlines using a harder charcoal pencil. Just to give me an idea of where things will be.

Then, gradually build up the tones and textures by layering and blending different shades of charcoal and graphite. These distinctive insects, with their unique colours and patterns, make for a fascinating subject to explore using this technique.

In recent years, the British ladybird population has been declining due to the loss of their natural habitats and the use of pesticides in agriculture. As a result, there are now conservation efforts underway to protect and preserve these important little creatures.

Overall, the British ladybird is a fascinating and important part of the UK’s natural ecosystem, and we should all do our part to ensure their survival for generations to come.

How To Help Ladybirds, You Can

Provide them with an abundance of flowering plants, as this is their primary source of sustenance. Ensure that your garden receives enough water to nourish their larvae.

To make your garden more appealing to ladybirds, you may also consider planting herbs such as dill and fennel. However, be mindful of the use of insecticides, as even eco-friendly ones can harm ladybirds and their food sources. Lastly, investing in a high-quality ladybird feeder can assist in attracting more ladybirds to your garden and keeping them fed during colder months when food is scarce.

There are 26 types of ladybird.
