Inspiration
Memento Mori was inspired by the timeless artistic tradition of reflecting on mortality as a means to appreciate life more deeply. The piece draws from classical vanitas still-life paintings, where symbols of death and decay coexist with those of vitality and renewal.
The skull, flowers, and butterflies were chosen to represent the fragile beauty of existence — a reminder that life’s impermanence gives it meaning.
Concept & Meaning
At its heart, Memento Mori is a meditation on the passage of time and the quiet grace found in acceptance. The skull anchors the composition as a symbol of mortality, while the flowers and butterflies embody transformation, hope, and the cyclical nature of life. The interplay of light and shadow suggests awareness — a moment of illumination that invites viewers to pause, reflect, and cherish the present. It is not a morbid contemplation, but a gentle reminder to live with intention and gratitude.

Technique & Process
Created entirely in charcoal, this piece explores the medium’s expressive range — from deep, velvety blacks to soft, luminous highlights.
Layering and blending techniques were used to achieve depth and realism, while controlled erasing brought light into the composition, symbolizing clarity emerging from darkness. Each element was carefully balanced to evoke harmony between life and death, stillness and movement.
Artist’s Reflection
This drawing became a personal exploration of mindfulness and acceptance. As I worked, I found myself slowing down, observing the subtle transitions between light and shadow — much like noticing the fleeting moments in life. Memento Mori serves as a reminder. It offers comfort, beauty exists even in impermanence. Awareness of life’s fragility can deepen our appreciation for every breath.
It can enhance every connection and emphasize every passing moment.
