As an artist grounded in the traditional techniques of charcoal and graphite drawing, I have observed the emergence of AI-generated art. I view it with a critical perspective.

I spend countless hours on each work of art, sometimes up to 60 hours on one work alone. I do this because, my goal is to capture the essence of my subjects. Through careful observation, I achieve this with intentional mark-making. Every smudge and line tells a story—not just of the subject, but also reflecting the growth and resilience of my artistic journey.

In this day everything is available at the click of a finger, so for me to fill every space of page with the tiniest of pencil marks i feel will be a lost art.

The Charm of Immediate Creation

I appreciate the attraction of AI-generated art. The ability to produce detailed images with just a few typed words is truly remarkable. AI presents a limitless range of possibilities at amazing speeds, making image creation accessible like never before. But,

Does speed translate into value?

Does increased accessibility guarantee genuine artistry?

And does the “creator” find any fulfillment in the process?

These questions are vital as we explore the intersection of art and technology. While AI-generated art can be visually impressive but it often lacks the personal touch of hand-made art. Creating art is an immersive experience that engages the senses, challenges the mind, and feeds the soul.

The Importance of Process

For me, the true value lies in the journey itself. The hours dedicated to studying my craft are essential to the final creation. The gradual buildup of tone and texture plays a crucial role in its progress.

Problem-solving is integral to the artistic process, as moments of frustration and breakthroughs shape the artwork. Each drawing captures my experiences as a self-taught artist, reflecting my dedication and providing a unique insight into my understanding—a snapshot of my creative mind!

A slip of the hand, an unexpected texture, or an unplanned shadow can lead to new insights and artistic directions. I regard AI as an innovative and distinctive addition to the art world, offering unique advantages. Still, I do not perceive it as a competitor to my own creations. My work will always embody authenticity, while AI-generated art can only be reproduced.

I want to master the enchantment of traditional art. I aim to explore the depths of classic techniques. I strive to express the raw, emotional beauty that only human hands can create.
