Commissioning an Artist: From History to How It Works Today.
A Brief History of Art Commissions.
Commissioning art has deep roots in human history. Long before galleries and online portfolios, artists were hired to create works that reflected faith, power, or personal legacy.
- Ancient Civilisations: Pharaohs, emperors, and nobles commissioned grand sculptures, murals, and monuments to celebrate victories or honour the gods. These works were symbols of wealth and divine favour.
- The Renaissance: Art commissions flourished as patrons like the Medici family supported artists such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. These collaborations produced masterpieces that blended personal devotion with artistic innovation.
- Modern Times: As art became more accessible, commissions shifted from royal courts to private homes. Today, commissioning an artist is a way to express individuality, emotion, and connection — a personal experience rather than a public display of power.

How to Commission an Artist: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Define Your Vision
Start by deciding what you want the artwork to represent. Consider the subject, size, and mood. Whether it’s a portrait, landscape, or symbolic piece, clarity helps the artist bring your idea to life.
Step 2: Research and Choose an Artist
Look for an artist whose style resonates with your vision. Explore their portfolio, read about their process, and ensure their medium — such as charcoal (this is what I work with), oil, or digital — aligns with your preferences.
Step 3: Make Contact– (Here’s My Commission Form)
Reach out to discuss your idea. Share reference images, inspiration, and any emotional or symbolic meaning behind the piece. This initial conversation sets the foundation for collaboration.
Step 4: Discuss Details and Pricing
The artist will outline options for size, materials, and pricing. A written agreement or quote ensures clarity on cost, timeline, and what’s included (such as framing or delivery). At this point I take payment of deposit to secure the booking.
Step 5: Creation Process
The artist begins crafting your piece, keeping you updated on progress. This is where skill, emotion, and creativity merge to transform your idea into a tangible work of art.
Step 6: Review and Final Approval
Once complete, you’ll receive images of the finished artwork for approval. Minor refinements can be made before the piece is sealed and prepared for delivery.
Step 7: Delivery and Display
Your commissioned artwork is carefully packaged and shipped. Once framed and displayed, it becomes a lasting expression of your story and taste.
The Modern Meaning of a Commission
While ancient commissions once shouted power and prestige, today they whisper something more personal — connection, memory, and meaning. A commissioned artwork is a collaboration between artist and collector, blending vision and craftsmanship into something timeless.
At Cutsforth Artistry, each charcoal commission is created for those who seek more than decoration — for those who value depth, emotion, and authenticity. Every piece is drawn with soul, crafted in fine detail, and made to hold meaning that endures.
